چکیده

INTRODUCTION Unilateral or bilateral dilation of the ureters occurs commonly during pregnancy. Ultrasonography is a suitable diagnostic method for hydronephrosis; however, it cannot differentiate obstructive from nonobstructive hydronephrosis. Our aim was to evaluate measurable changes in hydronephrosis induced by a mother's positional changes using ultrasonography to differentiate hydronephrosis during pregnancy from pathologic etiologies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Pregnant women presenting for routine ultrasonography were enrolled in this study. A patient history was taken, and a physical examination was performed. Ultrasonography was performed to determine gestational age, parity, fetal presentation, presence or absence of hydramnios, and hydronephrosis and its severity. Thirty minutes after changing position (flank position or on all fours), patients were reevaluated by ultrasonography to determine the severity of hydronephrosis. RESULTS Of 59 pregnant women with an average age of 25.4 years, 33 (55.9%) had no urinary complaint during pregnancy. Forty-one women (69.5%) had hydronephrosis, 24 (58.5%) of whom only in right kidney. The severity of hydronephrosis in one kidney was related with the severity of hydronephrosis in the other kidney (P = 0.007). Fetal presentation and gestational age were not associated with hydronephrosis. Risk of hydronephrosis was higher in the first pregnancy (likelihood ratio = 6.8, P = 0.009). Thirty minutes after changing positions, the anteroposterior pelvis diameter significantly decreased in the right and left kidneys (P = 0.004, P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Ultraonography in two steps with positional change (dynamic ultrasonography) may be used to differentiate hydronephrosis of pregnancy from other pathologies.

Positional changes in parotid glands during head and neck radiation therapy

Introduction: Xerostomia is the most common complication due to radiation–induced damage to salivary glands in head and neck cancer radiotherapy and it reduces quality of life. Parotid glands are main glands which they are account for secretion of stimulated saliva. Studies have demonstrated that mean tolerance parotid’s radiation dose under 26-30 Gy result in an increase in t...

haematobium infection: pitfalls in examining pregnant women

In areas where Schistosoma haematobium is endemic, urinary schistosomiasis and pregnancy are frequently concomitant; however, both these conditions may produce similar urinary tract changes in ultrasound scans and hence their differential diagnosis may be difficult. In patients with urinary schistosomiasis, focal and/or diffuse urinary bladder wall changes are frequently detected ultrasonically...

Pnm-28: Longitudinal Changes of Maternal Anthropometric Indices: A Cohort Study in Women during Pregnancy and Postpartum

Background: Evaluation of fat distribution is a way to assessment of physical health. Waist to Hip Ratio and waist circumference are the simplest anthropometric measurements to be used to determine the obesity and related disorders in pregnancy. Today a close consideration is given to WHR and WC assessment in order to evaluate physical health in epidemiological studies. Materials and Methods: O...

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo in Pregnancy.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a clinical entity characterized by acute, brief paroxysmal attacks of rotational vertigo induced by head position changes. It is the most common peripheral vestibular pathology and is seen more frequently in women. However, to our knowledge, there is very limited data on the association between BPPV and pregnancy in both English and Turkish literat...
